Fremantle Bowls Happenings

Just a short note to let you all know what has been happening at the Fremantle Bowling Club since the summer.

Bowls Competitions:

Friday Social Bowls is being ably run by Di Norkett so just turn up by 4-30pm to have a game.

Ladies Notes:

Marge and her helpers are busy planning for the season ahead, after their most successful season, last year. They have good numbers for both Tuesdays and Saturdays with some new faces emerging. They intend to run a Gala Day this year, so the men better get their aprons cleaned up and be ready to help.

New Bowlers:

Great to see such a lot of new full member bowlers this year.  They are; Tilly Sumich,  Linda Carruthers, all the way from Scotland, a special welcome Linda, Joy Edgar, Bill Owen and Peter Holmes ( both ex South Perth ), Dave Malkin returning from Subiaco Floreat, Gary Thomas, big Dave Arnold, Larry O’ Hare, Dennis Barron ( ex Melville ), Peter Berglund and Dennis Nott. I hope I haven’t missed anyone, so please let me know if I have.

Match Committee:

Colin Abe and his group have met on a number of occasions and are in the process of finalising the Bowls calendar for 2022,23.

I have put forward a couple of new events that Freo will run this year, which I think have been accepted, more details soon.

Colin and his crew will be responsible for drawing up a policy document in relation to the use of correct footwear and also dumping of bowls on our valuable greens.

Greens & Surrounds:

Joe Yukich and his merry men have been busy as always in helping our green keeper and also keeping the surrounds in great shape, well done guys.

C Green will be lightly renovated shortly in readiness for play in late October, weather permitting.

B Green will be the grass green used for our practice matches, along with our slick synthetic.

Selection:

Our selectors have elected Brian Jeppesen as Chairman. They have already met on a few occasions, no doubt tossing around names, organising practice matches and formulating policies etc for the coming year. Bloody selectors, you never know what they may be up to.

Coaching & Bowls Development:

Jeppo has  been working hard on his coaching and development program, details of which will  be  included in the club event calendar.

He will also be running a New Bowlers’ program on Saturday mornings in September, just like last year. It was a very successful program and has attracted a lot of new bowlers, some are  now committing to Pennants this year.

Don’t forget that we have other very competent coaches in Denise Abe.John Chessell.and Mathew Ngui. who are all willing to help if approached.

Please leave the coaching to the coaches though,  as they are the people trained in this area.

Jeppo with the assistance of others has commenced the first school coaching program for this year, with a group of students from Fremantle Christian College. I believe that John Curtin will also take advantage of this program as well.

Attack👍🧒🧔🏻

Di Norkett, John Drysdale, Colin Abe and I, met recently with Trevor Price from the Manning Bowling Club. Trevor has been instrumental in running a very successful Jack Attack event for a number of years. At this stage we intend to commence this series on the 8th of February, which will run for six weeks. More on this exciting concept as details come to hand.

Executive Committee

The above committee has been meeting regularly and are doing a good job  on the various tasks that present at a Bowling Club. Should you have anything at all that you think needs addressing, then please contact the relevant person direct.

Website:

John Drysdale is now in the process of tidying up and redesigning our website, He is seeking any old or current photos that you may have. Please contact John on 0449646393 If you can help, or if you can assist John with this task, he will be most grateful.

After Pennant Snack

Ruth Wachmer has kindly agreed to prepare our after Pennant snacks on a Saturday, bless her heart. She will need help on a Saturday morning, so we can organise a roster, so she can have a break if required. We are in the process of sourcing Pizzas for Thursdays.

Parking

I met with a City of Fremantle parking inspector recently to try and sort out the illegal parking in our car park by the sheds. Hopefully we can come to a satisfactory conclusion on this matter very soon. Parking in the driveway up to our greens is also a problem, but a little more complex to solve.

Driveway Road Condition

I have asked our Councillor Geoff Graham to assist us with this problem and also sent a letter of complaint to the Council about the bad condition of this road. Hopefully, they will act sooner than later to respond to our concerns.

Bowls WA AGM & Club Forum

Jeppo and I attended the above, held on Saturday morning the 30th July. Ken Pride conducted both meetings, which were well attended and run. There will be some changes to our Pennant Conditions this year, details will be sent to us all very soon.  Open Gender competition will most certainly take place for all Divisions on a Saturday, probably as early as the 2024/25 season.
